In a continually evolving healthcare climate—and with patients and payers demanding improved quality, safety, and cost containment— traditional hospital and healthcare organizations may be struggling to provide and sustain responsible, quality, and cost-effective care
Given the nature of these changes, organizations increasingly need a
new type of physician executive to take them into the future, a leader
who marries core leadership skills with clinical expertise and who will
influence the leadership team to continually evaluate quality, safety, and
patient care in innovative ways.
As the scope of these physician leadership roles changes, so does the
language surrounding them, resulting in a host of new physician executive titles, created and evolving with the goal of communicating the new
responsibilities and expectations these roles encompass (see “
Emerging Physician Leaders”). New titles, however, can also create confusion,
particularly in the case of recruiting new leadership and especially if the
organization and/or candidates are unclear on what the title really means.
It’s imperative, then, to take the time to understand the mechanisms
behind the physician leadership roles of the future and know how to
identify which ones are best aligned with the needs of your organization.
