New Traits and Competence
High leadership performance requires specific
traits and competencies that are not typically
emphasized in medical school and residency
curricula. Healthcare systems that are serious
about cultivating the next generation of physician
leaders need to adopt a comprehensive approach
with a focus on managerial skills, leadership
development, and executive coaching.
The differences between football and golf are
as sharp as the differences between leadership
and practicing medicine. Medicine and golf
require short-term focus and precision and are
primarily individual undertakings. Leadership
and football, on the other hand, require mid- to
long-term focus and emphasize strategy and
teamwork. For a physician (golfer) to have a
chance at becoming a high-performing leader
(quarterback), he/she needs practice and one-
